About

The Republic At Risk is joint report issued by Protect Democracy and Stand Up Ideas. It marks one year into the Trump presidency and asks a simple, yet critical question: How are America's democratic institutions holding up?

Protect Democracy is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization with an urgent mission: to prevent our democracy from declining into a more authoritarian form of government. Protect Democracy works to hold the President and the Executive Branch accountable to the laws and longstanding practices that have protected our democracy through both Democratic and Republican Administrations out of a belief that the only limits to prevent a slide away from our democratic traditions will be those that are imposed by the Courts, Congress, and the American people. For more information about the organization, go to www.protectdemocracy.org.

Stand Up Ideas was founded on the belief that love for democracy transcends party, Stand Up Ideas (SUI) works to strengthen Americans’ commitment to democratic ideals and norms across the partisan spectrum. At its core, Stand Up Ideas is a leadership and education organization. SUI engages people across the political spectrum who all share a commitment to the principles of individual rights, Constitutional checks and balances, rule of law, informed dialogue and demand honest and wise leadership. Stand Up Ideas was founded in 2017 by Evan McMullin and Mindy Finn to address the growing acceptance of autocratic rule in America. For more information about the organization, go to www.standupideas.com

What People Are Saying

A bipartisan agreement: Trump is bad for democracy

Jennifer Rubin, January 18, 2018

"Several aspects of the report are striking. First, no conservative or liberal of good will should have a problem with the vast majority of [recommendations]. ... Any candidate of either party running in 2018 would do well to adopt parts of the report, or all of it, presenting himself or herself as a leader in a new wave of pro-democracy reformers."

Does Donald Trump Want to Be Dictator of the United States?

Mark Follman, January 19, 2018

"The authors of “The Republic at Risk” suggest there is ample cause for hope...But they also warn that a riven, inwardly focused Congress “has largely recoiled” from the danger, an assessment that clearly rests at the feet of the party controlling both chambers. Unless and until that condition changes, Trump will no doubt continue to push the boundaries of the American presidency in dark and disturbing ways."
